Several years ago my husband eagerly purchased a smoker. He loves smoking meat; and we are enjoying eating all the yummy protein he is making. But making smoking sides was tricky. If you’ve ever smoke food you know the timing is a little fluid. So you need side dishes that are flexible. These smoked green beans are so yummy, versatile, and flexible! Throw them together and put them in the smoker or roast them in the oven. Not matter how you make the green beans recipe you will love ths depth of flavor that will leave you begging for more! This is my kids most requested dish, more than mac and cheese!

This side dish for smoked meats like bbq brisket, pulled pork, ribs, and chicken is super easy to make! All you need are a few simple ingredients you probably already have on hand:

  • 3 can of green beans (any style, drained)
  • 10 slices bacon
  • 1-3 onions, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 4 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar

I love how versatile this recipe is! You can cook these green beans at 350 F for 30 minutes in the oven or throw them in the smoker along whatever yummy meat you are smoking for 1-3 hours, doesn’t matter the temperature!

So prepare your cooking equipment by your preference.

HINT: I like to use a foil pan as it is easy to throw in the smoker, and reuse at the end.

Put your fork tender green beans (straight from the can or cooked if using fresh) into a baking pan.

In a skillet cook the bacon until done, but not crispy or brown. Remove the bacon and set aside.

In your hot skillet, add butter, sliced onions, and garlic. Cook them in the pan until tender, fragrant, and slighly golden.

Remove from heat and add  brown sugar, worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, and balsamic vinegar, stir.

Pour the saucy onions over the green beans.

If you are using a smoker, put the green beans in the smoker at whatever temperature your meat is at and smoke for 1-3 hours. It is super forgiving and will pick up a great, mild smoke flavor.

To roast in the oven simply cook for 30 minutes in a preheated 350 F oven.

If you are wondering if you can use fresh green beans – absolutely! I like using canned because they are already tender and are quick to throw together. But you can always use garden fresh veggies! If you are going to use them straight from the garden you will want to cook them with double the butter in the pan after the bacon is cooked, but before the onions are tenderized. Everything else is the same!

Ingredients
  

  • 3 16 ounce cans green beans drained
  • 10 slices bacon
  • 1-3 large onion sliced
  • 4 tablespoons butter melted
  • 2 cloves garlice minced
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar

Instructions
 

  • Cook 10 slices of bacon in a skillet until done, but not crispy. Remove bacon and set aside. Add the sliced onion, garlic, and butter to the skillet. Continue cooking over medium high heat until the onions are soft and lightly brown.
  • Put green beans into a baking dish. Toss with cooked onions and to pwith crumbled bacon.
  • In a small bowl mix brown sugar, worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, and balsamic vinegar, stir. Pour the mixture over the green beans.
  • TO SMOKE
    Put the green beans in the smoker at whatever temperature your meat is at and smoke for 1-3 hours.
  • TO ROAST IN THE OVEN
    Cook in a preheated 350 F oven for about 30 minutes.
