3rd Grade English

Third graders are reading confidently, but working on comprehension skills, writing, and use of the English language are still developing. Here are some important language arts skills grade 3 students are working on this year:

Reading strategies such as asking questions, making inferences and summarizing. They will work on describing, determining the main idea and details in both fiction and non-fiction texts.
Use context clues to learn new vocabulary and work on spelling more complex words too.
Organize their ideas wo write in a variety of genres including letters, personal narratives, fiction stories and research reports. They will continue to work on skills to revise and edit their writing.
Write in cursive.
Develop deeper understanding of parts of speech including: noun, verb, adverb, and adjective.
Correctly use basic punctuation.
Understand prefixes, suffixes and homophones.
Use reference books such as the dictionary and thesaurus.

3rd Grade Science

Students continue using the scientific method with hands-on experiments that allow them to make a hypothesis and observations. Although schools vary slightly, typically Earth science activities – layers of the earth, types or rocks, volcanos, weather, the water cycle, fun states of matter projects, recycling, astronomy for kids – fizzy planets, solar system worksheets, moon phases, constellations, classifying animals, the human body activities and more are topics covered in level 3.
