Activities for 5th Graders

Read grade-level books for at least 30 minutes at a time with good comprehension
Research a topic using a variety of sources, and use the features of a book
Understand that writing involves several steps: planning, revising, editing, rewriting and, sometimes, trying a new approach. Type two or more pages.
Write or type a rough draft of a paper in one sitting.
Collaborate with others on group projects and participate in group discussions by taking turn and listening to others
Use problem-solving strategies to solve real-world math problems
Add and subtract whole numbers, fractions and decimals
Use multiplication and long division to divide large numbers by multi-digit numbers. Memorize 0-12 multiplication facts.
Find volume and surface areas
Learn about energy, the human body systems, and the scientifice method

In 5th grade children will have a higher level of fluency with operations, fractions, and decimals. They should also be able to solve multi-step problems by doing some math in their head.
Evaluate numerical expressions with parentheses by using order of operation.
Complete a table for a two-variable relationship and graph it on a coordinate plane.
Write the decimal equivalent of a fraction with a denominator of 1,000
Understand place value. Ex: What is value of the 5 in 39,548.09?
Measure volumes by counting unit cubes and figuring out the area of real world problem
Read, write and compare decimals to thousandths.
Use greater than, less than, and equal signs to evaulate numbers (<, >, =) Ex: 68.098 _ 68.189
Round decimals to any place. Ex: Round 11.586 to the nearest tenth
Fluently add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers with decimals to hundredths.
Add and subtract fractions by making common denominators first; adding mixed numbers.
Convert like measurement units within a given measurement system. They should have basic information memorized like 12″ in a 1 foot, 4 cups in a quart, etc.
Be able to plot fractions on a number like Ex: 1/2, 1/4, 1/8

Students should be spending more time reading longer chapter books that are both fiction and nonfiction books and texts.
As they read they should be be using more advanced reading comprehension strategies (like inference). Their summaries should be more complete and be presented through writing or speaking. They should also be able to synthesize information from two texts with specific examples from the text, charts, images, videos, timelines and diagrams.
Learn new vocabulary words using context clues
Not only will your 5th grader be writing reports in complete paragraphs, but they should be using more complex vocabulary and specific details. Write a well organized paragraph with a topic sentence, supporting details and a closing sentence. These more advanced papers will take more energy and brainpower to complete; again practice is key!
Understand the differences in writing a book report versus an email or PowerPoint presentation.
Know the basic parts of speech and be able to diagram basic sentences
Use punctuation such as commas, apostrophes and quotation marks appropriately
Understand synonyms, antonyms and homophones

Science curriculum varries by state, but some common grade 5 science includes using the scientific method to complete science experiments, solar system, planets, water cycle, weather paterns, types of precipitation, storm readiness, environmental change, human body systems (skeletal, nervous, circulatory, recpiratory, reporductive, digestive, excretory), atomic theory, states of matter, types of energy, what is electricity / uses, Newton’s 1st / 2nd / 3rd law of motion

Fifth graders have dabbled in various specific history topics throughout elementary, but this year most schools start with exploration of America and go right up to the 20th century – giving students a understanding of the flow of our history. Topics tend to include: Jamestown settlement, Colonial America, the 13 originalal colonies, Revolutionary War, War of 1812, A New Nation, Westward Expansion with the Lousianna Purchase, American Civil War, the Great Depression, World War 1, World War 2, life in America throughout various decades, and touching on presidents and famous figures as they are met in Us History chronologically.
