Homemade Apple Pie
Ever since I was in elementary school I’ve loved baking! I think my Dad encouraged this interest by doing all the dishes after my baking projects! I would start with a recipe and tweak and perfect it until I had my own version that I could make to perfection. Fast forward to college when I was dating my soon-to-be husband; he adores pies. That’s probabaly an understatement! So I went to work again, this time perfecting my crust to make it flaky, just like he liked it. I’ve been making my homemade apple pie recipe for decades and am still perfecting it. Just a couple years ago, I figured out how to get it so there wasn’t so much liquid left – the best homemade apple pie. Seriously it is so yummy, flaky, rich, flavorful, and perfect-every-single-time! Let me share this easy homemade apple pie with the BEST apple pie from scracth recipe!

Homemade Apple Pie Recipe
To make this easy homemade apple pie, all you need are a few simple ingredients: Jump to Recipe
- 6-7 tart apples like granny smith,
- 4 tablespoon flour
- 1 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoon cinnamon
- a dash of nutmeg
Homemade pie crust recipe
To make my easy homemade pie crust I use the following materials:
- 2 cups flour
- ¾ teas salt
- 2/3 cup shortening (I use blue crisco)
- 7-8 TAB ice-cold water
Homemade Pie Crust
Start by pre-heating the oven to 425 F. Measure flour and salt in a medium bowl. Cut in shortening (I use this pastry cutter) until it resembles pees. Spoon in 7-8 tablespoon ice cold water and mix with fork until holds together. Don’t over mix; that will make it less flaky!
HINT: I put ice cubes in my water to get it really cold.

Use your hands to press mixutre into ball, again dont’ overmix or it will loose it’s flakyness. Divide the dough into two balls – with one slightly larger ball to use for the pie crust bottom.

Roll out the larger dough ball on a floured surface until it is larger than the pie pan. We use a 9″ pie pan and add a couple inces on all side. Carefully use a spatula to life up edges and fold over dough in half and quarter to transfer to your pie pan. Gently unfold and adjust so it is up the sides evenly all around. Set Aside.

Peel and slice your apples. I use this handy gadget that peels and slices the apples at the same time. My kids then eat the spaghetti apple peals as a snack!
In bowl add apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

Toss gently to combine. Look at that yummy homemade pie filling! It is so quick and easy to make your own delicious apple pie filling; I don’t understand why people buy the processed filling junk!
Homemade apple pie crust
Scoop your apple pie filling into your unbaked pie crust. Now you get to pick what type of top you want on your pie. You can roll out another sheet of dough and place it on top and pinch the endges for the simplest top. Make sure you cut slits in the top to allow the steam to escape. I like to use cookie cutters to cut out a fall leaf or apple shape at the top which looks super cute too. But today, we made a pretty lattice top.
Best homemade apple pie
To make a latticed top apple pie simply roll out the 2nd ball of pastry dough on your lightly floured surface. Use a pastry wheel cutter, (this is what gives pie the cute ruffled looking edges), simple pizza cutter (what we used in the above pie), or in a pinch a kitchen knife to make 10-12 strips. Lay down half of your strips, all facing the same direction, evenly spaced on your pie.
Now pull back every other strip half way. Lay one of your remaining dough strips down the middle. Lay the pulled back strips down flat, covering the strip you just layed. Now pull back the opposite ever other lattice strip and lay another reserved dough strip.

Continue back and forth until you have 5-6 strips going one direction and 5-6 strips going the other way.Now pinch the edges around the pieso you have one dough coming out. Using your fingers press the left hand from pie out and the right thumb and finger towards the pie to make the symetical wavy look around the outside of the dessert.
Isn’t that a pretty? It looks hard and complicated, but it is so easy!

Bake the apple pie in your preheated oven for 15 minutes. Now put a cookie sheet on rack just above the pie so it doesn’t brown and bake another 35 minutes. Then, turn the oven off but leave the pie in the oven for up to an hour. (Don’t open the door as this will allow the heat out) This allows the extrajuice to cook off so it isn’t a “soupy” pie. It will stay moist, but absorb any extra liquid.

Slice a piece of pie. Look at that beautiful fall dessert, the perfect apple pie!

You can cut your slices as big or small as you like, but typically you can get 8 slices out of your yummy apple pie. Seriously, look at that perfect apple pie filling!
THe inside has soft, but not mushy apples that are perfectly seasoned to be sweet and cinnamony without being too sweet.
We like to serve our apple pie when it is still slightly warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, but you can eat it plain, cold, with whipped cream, or even a slice of cheddar cheese if that is traditional in the area you are from.
It is so yummy with a not-too-rich satisfying filling that is just about the best comfort food there is. Plus it is filled with good-for-you apples and a delightful flaky crust.
Thank goodness apple pie is super popular not only in the fall to celebrate apple harvest in September, but for a Thanksgiving dessert and on the Fourth of July as well.

Mom's EASY Homemade Apple Pie Recipe from Scratch
Ingredients
- 6-7 large Tart apples like Granny Smith
- 4 Tablespoons all purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1 dash nutmeg
Double Crust Pie
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 2/3 cup shortening I use the blue Crisco package
- 7-8 Tablespoons VERY cold water
Instructions
- To make the crust:Measure the flour and salt in a large bowl and mix. Cut in shortening until it resembles peas. Spoon in 7-8 tablespoon ice cold water and mix with fork until holds together. Don't over mix. Divide into 2 with one slightly larger ball for bottom. Roll out on floured surface and line a 9" pie pan. Roll out 2nd ball on floured surface and use pastry cutter to make 10 strips or leave flat with apple cookie cutter or leave mini cutters cut out middle.
- To make the pie filling:In a large bowl add peeled and sliced apples. Toss in the flour, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Scoop into pie pan.
- Cover the pie with the 2nd ball that is either a flat sheet with cookie cutter or slits to allow steam to escape or make a lattice top.
- Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes. Add a cookie sheet on rack above pie so it doesn't brown (or cover with foil) and bake another 35 minutes. Turn oven off but leave it in the oven for up to an hour. This allows the extra juice to cook off so it isn't a "soupy" pie.
- Serve with vanilla ice cream, carmel sauce, or a slice of cheddar cheese if you like.
Just like my grandma made. Thanks for the recipe
