Breadmaker Recipes: Buns

I love my breadmaker! I will be sharing several breadmaker recipes with you in the near future, but today I am sharing how to make buns – you know hamburger buns, hot dog buns, sandwich buns, etc. These are delicious and practically make themselves!

The forgotten Breadmaker

Now, I’ll admit that I have not always made good use of my breadmaker. Like many of you, it was something that should be on your registry. So we got one and hauled it around as we moved from apartment to apartment after we got married. I used it just enough that my hubby didn’t tell me to get rid of it. But I didn’t really see the need or have great recipes to use.
When our family began trying to cut down on processed foods at the beginning of 2013 I quickly realized the only way to eat bread was to make it ourselves. Well, guess what, it is actually not that difficult and the bread tastes AMAZING!

Buy a Breadmaker!

A breadmaker practically makes the bread itself. For most loaves you toss it all in, push a couple buttons and in 3-4 hours you have amazing smelling, fresh, delicious bread! Plus you know everythign that went into the bread – no artificial preservatives!
So if you don’t have a breadmaker yet, put one on your Christmas list! And for all of you who put it on a wedding registry too, but have never really used it, it’s time to dust off your breadmaker.  I won’t link to any particular breadmaker because ours is an older model (made – ahem -  12 years ago).  But if you have a breadmaker you love – leave it in the comments for other readers to see!

Breadmachine Buns Recipe

  • 1 1/4 cup water
  • 1 egg
  • 6 TAB butter (salted & cut into pieces)
  • 3 TAB sugar
  • 4 cups flour (we use organic – it’s just fluffier & better for baking)
  • 1/3 cup nonfat dry milk (optional – just ads to the depth of flavor)
  • 1 TAB plus 1 teas gluten (it makes the bread better consistency, but if you are allergic you can omit it)
  • 2 teas salt
  • 2 1/2 teas yeast (I buy a jar to save $$ over the pouches)
  • 1 egg yolk with 1 TAB water to brush over top
  • sesame or poppy seeds for sprinkling (optional)
Toss all ingredients in the pan in order your bread machines asks – I just do this order here. Press dough cycle & START.
When it beeps turn dough on floured surface. Using a knife cut dough into 12 equal pieces. Make each piece into the shape you need, making sure to flatten them slightly. Put on a baking sheet. (I line baking sheets with parchment paper to make clean up easier.)  Cover loosely with plastic wrap and let rest for 30 minutes.
Preheat oven to 375 F. Brush rolls with egg glaze and sprinkle with seeds if desired. Bake 15-22 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove from sheet with spatula and allow to completely cool on a rack.
The buns will keep several days in a Ziploc bag on the counter.

We made our buns into a cute sandwich. But they are equally delicious no matter what you eat them with!
