christmas science activity
We love sneaking some Science into everything around here! Kids just love experiments and they donât even realize they are learning! All you need to try this fun Christmas projects for preschool are a few simple supplies you probably already have laying around your house:
Materials:
- paper plates to make into a cone shape
- baking soda
- vinegar
- water
- sequins
- food coloring
- bowl, spoon, tray to put in the freezer
- squirt bottle, eyedropper, or baster

melting christmas tree
To start with, you need to make a cone, tree-shaped mold out of paper plates, construction paper, etc. You will need enough baking soda and water dough (see below) to fill the containers you make so keep that in mind when sizing your Christmas trees. while you can make just one, we think it is more fun to have several evergreen Christmas trees in your forest.
Next, you are going to make a moldable baking soda mixture. Add just enough water to your baking soda so that you can pack it together and it doesnât fall apart. Next is optional, but extra pretty and fun! Add in glitter, sequins, and any other items you want to decorate your trees.
Now pack the baking soda mixture into your cone mold. Freeze for a few hours or make the day before! The more frozen they are, the longer it will take to melt the fizzy trees!

christmas science activities
When you are ready to complete your Christmas science experiment for kids simply place your frozen trees on a tray , pie pan, or plate with a little lip. Now remove the wrapper or mold to reveal your pretty trees.
Have the kids form a hypothesis (guess) about what will happen when they put the vinegar solution on the baking soda Christmas trees. You can record your hypothesis, materials, procedures, and more in this Christmas experiment with this free scientific method for kids printables.

Now mix green food coloring and vinegar and put in a squirt bottle or turkey baster. It’s time for the fun part – melting your baking soda Christmas trees. Pour or squirt the green mixture over the top of your cone shaped Christmas tree. Ask the kids to observe what happened.
HINT: If you want to speed up the melting process you can add some hot water to the vinegar mixture.

As you the trees both change colors and melt you can witness the baking soda and vinegar reaction that takes place as it foams, bubbles, and starts melting at the bottom of the dish.
So what happened? The baking soda is a base and the vinegar is an acid. When you combine the two, you produce a gas called carbon dioxide. You can see, hear, feel, and smell the chemical reaction!
Do your young children really need to know the science terms? We don’t think so! The point is to keep the curious, interested, and eager to learn new things! Kids who try new things, ask questions, and are excited to learn will be ready to learn a variety of new content in their schooling. For now, just help them learn that science is all around us and SCIENCE IS FUN!
