Use up those broken crayon pieces with a fun Christmas art project for kids! Our family loves making crayon art projects and are always looking for new ideas. This fun melted crayon Christmas tree came to me when we were learning about famous artist Seurat who used lots of little dots of color that didn’t look like anything up close, but when you stood back you could see an amazing scene with lots of objects. Our Christmas craft project is simplified for younger students such as toddlers, preschoolers, kindergartners, grade 1, and grade 2 students – but produces lovely results. You will be proud to hang this beautiful Christmas painting in your home or use it as a kid made Christmas present for grandparents.

We LOVE melting crayons to make art at our house! So we took crayons (pieces really) and chopped them up.

place broken crayon pieces on canvas

My 4-year-old put the different pieces on a small canvas to make a Christmas tree. I love how there were so any shades of green and brown.
You can add other colors for ornaments or Christmas lights. You could also make your crayon art project into a winter scene, large ornament, holiday wreath, rudolph the red nosed reindeer, house with pretty lights, gingerbread man, or any other favorite item your child would like to create.

I put the canvas on a cookie sheet and put in a preheated at 250 F for just 30 seconds. The idea is to go low and slow. You don’t want to burn the canvas!
This clever Christmas Tree Crayon Melting is such a unique way to make melted crayon artwork. It reuses broken crayons, is easy-to-make, and such a pretty finished art project.

TADA! Her own impressionistic piece of art! She is so pleased with herself & is thrilled to have Christmas artwork to hang up in HER room =-)
I think if we were making it again I would encourage her to use less crayon and spread it out more. I would also encourage her to pick a background color that she could make all out of the same colored crayon pieces.
