Telling Time Practice

Materials:

  • Telling Time Practice PDF: Download and print the puzzle cards from a this post.
  • Cardstock paper (optional): Printing the cards on cardstock paper adds extra sturdiness, especially for younger children who might handle them more vigorously.
  • Scissors: If you print the cards on standard printer paper, you might need scissors to cut them out. Pre-cut cards from downloadable resources might eliminate this step.
  • Clear contact paper (optional): Laminating the cards with clear contact paper creates a wipeable surface, allowing you to reuse the cards with dry-erase markers.
  • Dry-erase markers (optional): If you laminate the cards, dry-erase markers can be used to write on the puzzle card with he digital time display.

Clock practice for 2nd grade

The game is simple. Shuffle the cloud and umbrella cards, then lay them face down on a flat surface. Players take turns flipping over a cloud card and an umbrella card. If the time displayed on the cloud card matches the time shown on the analog clock face of the umbrella card, they’ve found a match and get to keep the pair! The player with the most matching pairs at the end of the game is crowned the “Time Telling Champion!”

Telling time 2nd grade

The cloud and umbrella puzzle cards offer a springboard for even more time-telling fun! Here are a few extension activities to keep the learning and laughter going:

  • “Beat the Clock” Challenge: Set a timer for a short duration (1-2 minutes). Players take turns flipping over cloud cards. Whoever finds a matching umbrella card before the timer runs out wins a point!
  • “Minute Match” Race: Divide players into teams. Shuffle the cloud cards and spread them face down in the center. On “Go!”, each team sends a player to flip over a cloud card. The first player to correctly identify the number of minutes shown on the digital time wins a point for their team.
  • “Create-Your-Time” Creativity Boost: Provide blank clock faces (you can find these online or draw them yourselves) and construction paper scraps. Challenge kids to design their own unique clock faces, then use the cloud cards for inspiration to set the hands to specific times.
  • “Story Time with Time”: Read a children’s book that incorporates time references throughout the story. Pause at specific points and have kids use the cloud cards to find the matching time on the umbrella cards. This reinforces the practical application of time-telling in everyday situations.
