Analog clock practice
At what grade do kids start learning to tell time? Generally, it begins in kindergarten. That’s when children embark on their journey to understand both analog and digital clocks. Althought students each progress at their own pace with review at each level, generally:
- In kindergarten, they learn how to recognize the numbers on a clock face and understand the basic concepts of morning, afternoon, evening, and night, along with days of the week and months of the year. They start telling time to the hour (like “o’clock”) and half-hour (like “half past”).
- By first grade, students review telling time to the hour and half-hour and introduce the concept of 15 minutes. They become familiar with phrases such as “half past the hour.”
- In second grade, kids expand their skills to reading time to the nearest five minutes—for example, 3:10 or 3:25. They also learn the difference between AM (morning) and PM (afternoon/evening) while understanding terms like “quarter past” and “quarter to.”
- Finally, by third grade, students become proficient at telling time to the minute and even tackle time elapsed story problems.
