Rhyming  Activity

Kindergarten kids will LOVE this rhyming activity! Kids will pick a watermelon seed card, then identify the image on the card. They will then match it to the rhyming watermelon slice. They continue this until they sort all the words. THis rhyming words activity is perfect for kindergartners and grade 1 students to go along with a watermelon theme! Kids learn so much better when they are having fun, like with this rhyming activity!

To prepare:

  • A4 paper
  • Printer
  • Scissors
  • Laminator

Print as many cards as needed for your students. Have these set up in a center so that kids can benefit from the rhyming activity. Plus, this means you can laminate the cards and have them used repeatedly.

Rhyming Words Activity

I LOVE using new ways to practice rhyming skills – they are so much fun for kids and best of all, they are quick to setup and play! Use these cards to help kids learn to read and identify rhyming and CVC short vowel words. We know that with learning, repetition and practice is key. Kids will be motivated to find the matching rhyming word to place it onto the watermelon slice.

Rhyming picture words

I always encourage kids to identify the CVC word first, then to look for the rhyming word on the slice.

After you’ve printed and laminated (optional) the cards, place them on the table and show the kids what they need to do. They read the CVC word on a watermelon pip, then perhaps identify the short vowel sound, then they look for a matching rhyming CVC word on the watermelon slice.

Rhyming activity for kindergarten

So each slice should have two matching rhyming pairs.

You can extend the activity and have the kids write the rhyming words in their books and then write some sentences with he words to show their skills.

This center is very visual, having the words in pictures, I find really helps younger kids identify the rhyming sounds.

CVC words can be difficult for kindergarten kids. Encourage them to work on their reading and rhyming skills with this set of fun printables!
