Koalas for Kids

Afer a gestation period of only 35 days, a baby Koala we call a joey is born. Looking like a pink jellybean, this joey is hairless, blind, and has no ears. Using its sense of smell and touch this joey makes its way into the mothers pouch an dattaches itself to a teat. The joey stays in the pouch for about seven months. When it does start to leave, it returns only to nurse. The joey continues to stay with its mother, hanging on its back, for a few more months while it learns how to survive. A koala can begin to live on its own when it is around 12 months old. In the wild, koalas can life for around 10-15 years. They lie in eucalpyt forests, feeding on gum leaves and only drinking water during a drought or on extremely hot days.
