Black Bear Facts for Kids
Black bears don’t start breeding until they are around three to five years of age. After a gestation period of around 220 days, a female bear gives birth two to three babies. Born with fine, gray hair, and underdeveloped back legs, the babies take around five weeks to begin walking. It can take anywhere from 28 to 40 days for them to open their eyes. The cubs rely on their mother’s milk for around the first 30 weeks of their life and begin to become independent at around 16 to 18 months old. Black bears can live up to 18 years of age in the wild.
