What is a Pinniped?

If you’ve ever visited a zoo, aquarium, sea world, or famous Pier 39 in San Francisco you’ve probably been charmed and fascinated by friendly sea lions.  Even if you weren’t headed to see them, you could probably hear them making their vocalizations. Sea lions, seals, and walruses are all carnivorous, aquatic mammals that are part of a group called Pinnipeds.

These large animals are super cute and funny to watch – especially as they try to haul out their large bodies from the water. However when they swim – they are truly graceful and downright acrobatic. They are lots of fun to watch.  This seal lion lesson is a fun science unit is a fun way to learn more about these amazing animals for kids of all ages from kindergarten, first grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, 6th grade, 7th grade, and 8th grade students.

 

Pinniped Lesson

In this pinniped lesson, we will learn about seals, true seals, sea lions, and walruses. We will explore the coasts where these large aquatic mammals make their rookeries to bear about one pup a year. Also, we will learn how blubber keeps them warm in an easy science experiment. Walrus Facts for Kids

In this seal, sea lion, and walrus lesson your kindergartners, grade 1, grade 2, grade 3, grade 4, grade 5, grade 6, grade 7, and grade 8 student will learn what these water dwelling animals have, live, and eat. Kids will have fun recording what they’ve learned as they make this cute printable animal craft.

Make all 3 (walrus, sea lion, and sea) if you like. You can print in color or in black and white and use crayons to colour the animals with crayons, colored pencils, markers, gel pens, etc.  Now use scissors to cut out he template, and glue or tape together on the tabs. Fold along the solid lines and you have a super cute pinniped craft!

Science Game

Kids will love reviewing what they’ve learned about pinnipeds with this fun science game for kids. Simply print the black and white bingo cards, grab something to mark your space (lego, M&M, buttons, etc), and cut apart your calling cards. Read the clues and have students mark the spot corresponds.  You can play 4-in-a-row, four corners, black, or whatever version you like.
