Snakes for Kids
Egg-laying snakes find a safe, moist, warm place such as a hollow log or a hole in the ground in which to lay their eggs. These eggs have a soft shell, and a kind of leathery feel. The eggs can take up to 60 days to hatch. These baby snakes use special teeth to break the leathery membranes of their shell casings. Snakelets need to eat in order to survive, so head of straight away hunting for small rodents or reptiles. As snakes grow, the molt, shedding their old skin to make way for a new one. Depending on the species and the living conditions, these snakes will begin breeding within two to four years.
