Sh and Ch Worksheets

Did you know that children typically develop the ability to correctly produce the “sh” and “ch” sounds between the ages of 3 and 4 years old? This is an important milestone in their speech development as these sounds are commonly found in words in the English language. Research has shown that by the age of 3, most children are able to produce the “sh” sound correctly, followed by the “ch” sound by age 4. It is important for parents and caregivers to encourage and support children as they practice and refine their speech sounds during this developmental stage.

Note: sh and ch words are also known as digraphs.

Sh and Ch Words

However, some children have trouble pronouncing words with the “sh” and “ch” sounds. It’s actually a common challenge for younger kids as they are developing their speech skills.

Research has shown that children often struggle with the “sh” and “ch” sounds because they involve the coordination of different parts of the mouth. The “sh” sound is made by pushing air through a small opening created by the tongue and teeth, while the “ch” sound requires a similar air release but with the tongue positioned slightly further back in the mouth.

So, if you hear a child having difficulty with these sounds, just remember that it’s a normal part of their speech development. With practice and patience, most kids are able to eventually master these sounds. Keep encouraging them and celebrating their progress!

Are you looking to improve your child’s speech and language skills? Practice with words that have the “sh” and “ch” sounds can be incredibly beneficial! The “sh” sound is a voiceless postalveolar fricative, while the “ch” sound is a voiceless palato-alveolar affricate.  For example, words like “sheep,” “shark,” “shine,” and “shelter” all begin with the “sh” sound. Meanwhile, words like “chicken,” “cheese,” “chart,” and “choir” start with the “ch” sound. Research has shown that focusing on specific sounds can help children develop their pronunciation and expand their vocabulary.

By regularly practicing words like “shell,” “cheese,” “shoe,” and “chair,” you can help your child strengthen their articulation and phonological awareness. Plus, it can be a fun and engaging way to bond with your little one!
