Digraphs

A digraph is a pair of letters that make one sound.  Try sounding out a word such as “ship” and you’ll find there are only three sounds /sh/ /i/ /p/ . The individual letter sounds of /s/ and /h/ can’t be heard so it’s a digraph. Whereas if you can still hear the individual sounds of a letter combination such as “fr”, for example frog /f/ /r/ /o/ /g/, then it’s a blend. This digraph game is a fun way for kindergartners and grade 1 students to practice identifying, listening for, and spelling digraphs for kids. This LOW PREP digraph activity is perfect for sneaking in some educational phonics practice over the summer months to avoid the summer slump. These digraph puzzles focus on some well known digraphs such as “sh”, “th”, “wh”, “ch”, “ph” and “qu”.

Digraph Activities

Explain to the kids that beginning digraphs are found at the start of a word and that ending digraphs are found at the end of a word.  Next, lay out the puzzles. Model what to do by saying something like “My ice-cream has /sh/”, then find the matching piece and say “Ship begins with /sh/”.  Then ask the kids to read the rest of the digraph ice-creams and find the cones with the matching pictures. This activity includes:
  • ch digraphs – cheese, chair
  • sh digraphs – ship, shoe
  • wh digraphs – whale, wheel
  • th digraphs  – thermos, throne
  • ph digraphs – photo, phone
  • qu digraphs – queen, quilt
  • words ending with ch for kindergarten – bench, beach
  • words that end with th for kindergarten – bath, mouth

As an extension activity, ask a child to pick their favorite ice-cream puzzle. Then see if they can think of any other words that begin or end with that digraph.

Digraphs

As children progress in phonics they work on blends and digraphs chart. Digraphs are two consonants that make one sound such as /TH/ says thumb (phoneme). CH in the word “chair” and PH in the word “phone” are both examples of digraphs. Consonant blends have two constonants that each still make their own sound such as . If you are looking for more blends for kids games, worksheets, and activities? Check out these resoures or see all our digraph activities or consonant activities.

Trigraphs

Trigraphs make a single sound that is represented by three letters.  For example: In the word ‘match’, the three letters ‘tch’ at the end make only one sound.

Dipthongs

A diphthong is a sound formed by combining two vowels in a single syllable. The sound begins as one vowel sound and moves towards another. The two most common diphthongs in the English language are the letter combination “oy”/“oi”, as in “boy” or “coin”, and “ow”/ “ou”, as in “cloud” or “cow

Hi Beth. Just wandering why when I print your free projects the back ground comes out black. Because when I look at the ice cream puzzles it shows a white back ground .
I love your work sheets and projects. Have done quite a few. Love them.
    Thanks. Bonnie

I suggest downloading the printable first. Then print the downloaded copy. Depending on your internet provider sometimes that can happen when printing from an online copy. Enjoy
