Long u vowel
There are numerous vowel teams to learn. Some are easy like, oy and oi. One is used at the end of the word/syllable and one is in the middle or beginning. But others require a little more work. And this is one of them, the long u vowel team.Long u sound words

There are four different ways to make the long u vowel team. And we will divide them into two categories that generally work. Those used in the middle of the word and those used at the end.Middle of the Word:
There are two main ways to make the long u vowel team in the middle of a word, “UI” and “OO”. So when you hear the sound that almost sounds like you are saying, “EWWWW, that is gross” and you hear it in the middle of a word there are two options.- “OO” – Now “OO” can make the short u sound like in book. But it also makes the long u sound “ewwww” as in moon. YOu can also see it in words like in igloo and moo.
- “UI” – This is another option. What is hard is there is not a generalization on when to use which one. The children just have to learn what works and what doesn’t. But “UI” also makes the “EWWWW” sound. Once again it is in the middle of the words. Some examples are juice and fruit.
End of the Word:
Very similar to the middle of the word, there are two vowel teams that can be found at the end.- “EW” – When a word ends with the “EWWWW” sound, “EW” is one option for making that fun sound. Blew and chew are an example of this.
- “UE” – Our last option for making the “ewwww” sound is “UE”. Glue and cue are just two of the words that make this sound using the “UE”.
- I think it is also important to notice here that you spell blue (the color) with the ue, and blew (exhale) with the ew.

With just a little cutting, you will be ready to go.- First, print off the pages on card stock paper.
- Next laminate so they can be durable enough for the clothespins, and children can fill in the vowel team on the clip cards if they desire.
- Finally, gather up dry erase markers and clothespins.

Now it is time to read and spell these long u vowel teams.Simply place one of the cards in front of your little one. Have them sound out the word making the “ewww” sound when they get to the blanks. Then have them write in the two letters that correctly spell the word. Finally, have them place a clothespin on the correct vowel team.It is that simple. They get to practice making the long u sound and figuring out which vowel team to use.Vowels Printables
