As kindergarten students begin to decode words they learn to listen for the beginning, middle and ending sounds. For example in the word cat, they learn to hear the c – a – t  are all seperate letters that are needed to spell the word. As children move into grade 1 they learn that sometimes the ending sound can be a digraph. Digraphs are two letters that make a single sound, like “sh” or “ch”. For example, in words like “brush” and “watch”, the ending sound is made up of the digraph “sh” and “ch”. Now students can read and spell more complicated words by hearing the digraph chunk which can occur at the begining or end of the word.

As part of 1st grade phonics, children learn to listen for, identify, and spell ending digraphs. An ending digraph is a combination of two letters that come together at the end of a word to create a distinctive sound. One common example of an ending digraph is “-ch,” which makes the “ch” sound in words like “watch” and “match.”  Ending digraphs are important to understand in order to accurately pronounce words and improve reading skills.
