What is the Schwa Sound?

The schwa sound is the most common vowel sound in spoken English. It’s a quick, relaxed, and neutral pronunciation that sounds a lot like a “short u” or “uhh.” Think of words like “wonderful” and “Monday.” The schwa helps us pronounce unstressed syllables quickly, making the main beats of spoken words easier to emphasize.

But in this schwa sound game we will be focussing on the schwa words with /on/ spelling: son, ton, won, none, money, front, London, Monday, person, wonder, reason, second, astronaut, wonderful, inconsistent

Some examples of schwa words include: about, banana, camera, dollar, sofa, water, pencil,. moment,. button, problem, enter, rabbit, window, happen, famous, system, option, total, doctor, kitten, novel, music, rhythm,. forget, cotton, public, purple, contact, urban, lemon, bottom, logic, nation, custom, artist, symbol, focus, modern, student, minute, broken, hidden, frozen, bacon, human, garden, common, dragon, keyboard, system

Why is the Schwa Sound Tricky?

The schwa sound doesn’t have a precise, standard pronunciation. Because it sounds so similar to the short “u,” many dictionaries use the same symbol for both sounds. This can make it confusing, especially for kids, who might expect the “o” in “on” to always sound like “on the box.” Instead, they need to learn that sometimes “on” sounds like “uhh-n,” as in “son,” “ton,” “won,” and “Monday.”
