Vowel team activities

There are so many vowel teams, and it is a good idea to review them. These vowel team flashcards can help. Learning does not come easy for my sweet little girl. Every step forward is a hard-fought battle. And even after that hard-fought battle, many times I find that we have lost some of our footings and we have to review. Vowel teams are tricky. There are so many of them and so many generalizations. And to top it off, there are lots of exceptions to the rules.

So I decided we needed to spend time each day reviewing these pesky vowel teams. I wanted it to be quick, so I went with some colorful flashcards that will help her visualize the sounds she has learned.

What is A Vowel Team

I have homeschooled my kiddos from the beginning, and I have to admit there are a few things I wish I could go back and change.

One is how I taught my oldest kiddos to read. While trying to find what would work with my little girl, I discovered the wonderful world of syllables and syllable types. Even with all her struggles, I believe she will be a better speller than her brothers due to the foundations she is learning with syllables. It helps with reading and spelling. long vowel vowel teams

Syllable types

There are six syllable types.

  • Closed doors – these are the only syllable types that make short sounds, and they have a consonant after the vowel. (cat, hap/pen)
  • Open doors – these make the long sound because there is not a consonant after the vowel. (go, ho/tel)
  • Magic e – THe e is silent and makes the vowel long (cake, kite, hope)
  • R-Controlled vowels – with these you do not hear the vowel, just the r (car, girl, her, or, purse) I actually added these into the review cards, because she needed to review these sounds too.
  • Consonant + Le – this syllable has a consonant and then le (ap/ple, bu/gle)

And then the vowel teams. This syllable I think is the hardest, because there are SOOO many of them. But basically, it is when two vowels come together to make a sound. Sometimes they make a long sound. (Like ‘ee” in feet).

But then sometimes they make a totally different sound. We can see that in vowel teams like ou. Sometimes it says “ow” like couch, and sometimes it says “oo” like in soup. And that is why constant review is needed, especially for our learners that need a little extra attention. 6 syllable types

Before reading our passage for the week, I like to pull these flashcards out.

I show my little girl the card and we practice saying something like this:

  • “ai says /a/ like in train.”
  • “oi says /oy/ like in oil.”

It is a quick way for her to see the letters with a picture. But also gives her a chance to say the letters out loud, make the sound, and use a word that also makes that sound. I love it as a quick review, and I hope you do too.
