Here’s how you can make learning addition facts fun with this activity.

How to Use This Activity Step by Step

Preparation:

  • Print out the squirrel and acorns printable. Make sure you have enough copies for each child.
  • Gather coloring materials like crayons, markers, or colored pencils.
  • Have scissors and glue sticks ready for the kids to use.

Coloring:

  • Let the kids color their squirrel and acorns. This part of the activity is a great way to let them express their creativity. Encourage them to use different colors and make their squirrels unique.

Cutting:

  • After the kids have finished coloring, have them cut out the squirrel and the acorns. Depending on the age and skill level of your students, you might need to assist with the cutting. Safety first!

Practicing Simple Addition

  • Write basic addition facts on the acorns. For example, you could write “2 + 3” on one acorn and “5” on another. Make sure you have pairs that match up correctly.
  • Alternatively, you can let the kids write the addition facts themselves if they are able. This adds another layer of learning to the activity

Math Craft

  • Have the kids solve the addition facts with the correct sums. They can then glue the acorns around the squirrel, creating a fun and educational display.
  • You might want to make a sample craft yourself to show the kids what the final product should look like.

Extension Activities

Once your students have mastered the basic addition facts with this craft, there are plenty of ways to extend the learning:

  • Subtraction Facts – Use the same squirrel and acorns printable, but this time write subtraction facts on the acorns. This helps reinforce the concept that addition and subtraction are related.
  • Addition Stories – Encourage the kids to come up with little stories involving their squirrels and acorns. For example, “My squirrel found 3 acorns, then it found 2 more. How many acorns does my squirrel have now?” This helps them apply math to real-life scenarios
  • Group Work  – Have the kids work in pairs or small groups to complete the activity. This not only makes the activity more social but also allows them to learn from each other.
  • Math Centers – Use this activity as part of a math center rotation. Kids can work on the craft while you work with small groups on more challenging concepts.
  • Outdoor Integration – If you have access to an outdoor area, take the kids outside to collect real acorns. They can use these in place of the printable ones to practice their addition facts. This adds a sensory element to the learning experience.
