• Kids learn better with visuals. Use charts, diagrams, or even videos that show step-by-step processes. This helps them see the sequence of actions required in procedural writing.

Procedural Writing Examples

Start with simple tasks before moving on to more complex ones. Activities like making a sandwich, tying shoelaces, or planting a seed are great starting points. Once they get the hang of it, you can introduce more detailed tasks.

Practicing procedural writing helps children learn the importance of exact steps and using words carefully to convey meaning. I like to start teaching this concept by bringing out all the things to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I tell the kids they need to give me step-by-step instructions to make it. Then I do only exactly what they say.

• They say get the bread. I tear open the bread container because they didn’t say to take off the twisty tie first
• They say to put peanut butter on the bread, I set the peanut buter contatiner on top of the bread, etc.
• If they tell me to spread the PB, but forget about the knife part, I use my hands.

You get the idea. This is a silly activity that kids will remember!

How to Teach How to Writing
