Teaching procedural writing can be a breeze if you break it down into simple, manageable steps. Here are some tips to get you started:
- Before jumping into activities, it’s important to explain what procedural writing is. I usually tell my students that it’s like giving someone a set of directions. You know how you follow a recipe to make cookies? That’s procedural writing! It includes step-by-step instructions that need to be followed in order.
- To make it relatable, use examples from everyday life. For instance, you can ask kids to describe how they get ready for school or how they brush their teeth. Breaking down these common tasks helps them understand the concept better.
- Kids learn better with visuals. Use charts, diagrams, or even videos that show step-by-step processes. This helps them see the sequence of actions required in procedural writing.
Procedural Writing Examples
Start with simple tasks before moving on to more complex ones. Activities like making a sandwich, tying shoelaces, or planting a seed are great starting points. Once they get the hang of it, you can introduce more detailed tasks.
Practicing procedural writing helps children learn the importance of exact steps and using words carefully to convey meaning. I like to start teaching this concept by bringing out all the things to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I tell the kids they need to give me step-by-step instructions to make it. Then I do only exactly what they say.
- They say get the bread. I tear open the bread container because they didn’t say to take off the twisty tie first
- They say to put peanut butter on the bread, I set the peanut buter contatiner on top of the bread, etc.
- If they tell me to spread the PB, but forget about the knife part, I use my hands.
You get the idea. This is a silly activity that kids will remember!
How to Teach How to Writing
Now, let’s work on a fun and engaging activity – making a lemonade writing craft! This activity will help kids practice their procedural writing in a creative way.
Materials Needed
- Printable lemonade writing templates (you can find these in this post)
- Colored pencils or markers
- Scissors
- Glue
- Construction paper
Steps to Follow
- Introduction: Start by discussing the activity with your kids. Explain that they will be writing instructions on how to make lemonade, then creating a craft to go along with it.
- Download and Print: Get the lemonade writing templates. Print them out on sturdy paper so they can handle the craft materials.
- Brainstorming: Before writing, have a brainstorming session. Ask questions like, “What do we need to make lemonade?” and “What are the steps we should follow?”
- Writing the Steps:
- First: Write down the first step. It could be something like, “First, gather all your ingredients: lemons, sugar, water, and ice.”
- Next: Move on to the next step. For example, “Next, cut the lemons in half and squeeze the juice into a pitcher.”
- Then: Continue with, “Then, add sugar and water to the lemon juice and stir until the sugar dissolves.”
- Finally: Conclude with, “Finally, add ice to the pitcher and serve your lemonade in a glass.”
- Creating the Craft:
- Cut and Color: Have the kids color their templates and then cut them out carefully.
- Assemble: Glue the pieces onto a sheet of construction paper to create a lemonade pitcher.
- Display: Let them display their work proudly. This not only makes them feel accomplished but also reinforces their learning. There are two options to display their writing, they can do this directly on the pitcher too.
Summer writing activity
Once your students have completed their lemonade writing craft, you can extend the learning with these fun activities:
Encourage kids to write down their favorite recipes at home. They can swap with their classmates and try making each other’s favorite dishes. This reinforces procedural writing and introduces them to new foods.
Instructional Videos
