These subitizing and addition puzzles are simple, low-prep puzzles which will provide your learners will a lot of fun while learning. These puzzles are perfect to begin working on their number sense. This subitizing activity is perfect for kindergartners who are learning to add numbers together in Kindergarten math!

Subitizing Activities

Subitizing is a skill which basically means that when the learner looks at a particularly quantity there are immediately able to tell that what the numerical amount is. For e.g. in a ten frame if there are 4 dots present, instead of having to count, they will be able to recognize that it is 4 without having to count each dot individually. Similarly, in a dice learners will be able to recognize the number of dots on each side without having to count it.

Materials for the printable:

  • Printer
  • Laminator (if you wish to make the pages re-usable)
  • Laminating sheets
  • Dry erase sheets (if you do not wish to laminate, you can opt to use these sheets)

If you are just introducing your learning to subitizing and addition start off with the smaller numbers first, before proceeding to the larger numbers. For e.g. start off with the number 1 or 2 puzzles and then proceed to the larger numbers.
First, start off by asking your learner to identify the number of yellow dots and blue dots on the dice. They will then have to find the matching number of dots on the dominoes. For e.g. if there are 3 yellow and 3 blue dots on the dice, they will have to choose the domino piece that has 3 dots on either side. They will then form the addition sentence based on the number of dots on the dice as well as the domino.
The final step will include some addition and subitizing. The learner can either find the total number by subitizing based on the dice and domino, or add the total number of dots based on the number sentence to find the total.

The puzzle has a total of 4 pieces and the learner will have to reason out at each step to figure out the respective pieces in the puzzle.
If the learner is just learning their number sense be sure to not overwhelm the learner by introducing too many puzzles all at once. Make sure the learner familiarizes themselves with their addition and number sense before introducing more puzzles or larger numbers.
