This week we started a whole new adventure in our literacy journey. For the past few years, our lessons have focused on learning syllable types that will help us read and spell words. But this week, we are focusing on a rule that mainly helps with spelling. s or es

Most the time when we are changing a word from singular to plural, we just add an s. Of course, we have words that totally change, mouse to mice. And we have words that drop the “Y”, such as sky to skies. Other times, we add an “es”. And that is what this activity is all about. When do we add that “es”.

We add the es to words when they end in the following:

  • ch – When a word ends in a ch, we add an es, such as churches or lunches
  • sh – Another digraph that needs an “es” is the “sh”. Words like bushes and wishes are just a few examples. Be careful though the plural of fish is usually fish.
  • o – In most words that end in a consonant and then an o, you add an es. For example, you have potatoes and tomatoes. Like many English rules, this has some exceptions like photos or pianos.
  • x – Another easy one is words that end in x, you get to add an “es”. Foxes, axes, and taxes are great examples of this.
  • s or ss – If a word ends with s or ss, you get another chance to add that “es”. Check out the words like gases, buses, glasses, or dresses.
  • Z – Yep, this guy is always last. But if a word ends in a z or a double zz due to the floss rule, you have to add the “es”. Buzzes and freezes are two fun examples.

Plurals es worksheet

This St. Patrick’s Day activity is a fun way to help children practice when to add the “es” vs “s”.  Before we began, we brainstormed all the ways that required us to use the “es”. We wrote this on a whiteboard, and I reminded my little girl of any ones she forgot.

Then I had her cut out the coins.

Plural Nouns Worksheets

Next, we read the words. Then I would ask her if I should add the “s” or the “es”. If she couldn’t remember, I would ask her what did the word end in. We would then look on the white board. If the ending wasn’t on the white board, she knew she had to glue on the “s”. If the ending was on the white board, she would pick up the “es” to glue on.

It was a simple way for us to focus on endings and which one needed that special “es”.
