Homemade Taco Pizza Recipe - our families favorite dinner recipe is made from scratch in under an hour!

In some parts of the United States (like Minnesota) you can actually buy Taco Pizza. But in other states, it is unheard of.

Now don’t tell me you don’t like it if you haven’t tried it! I use to think I didn’t like it either, then I tried it, and let me tell you I LOVE it!

When we moved to a state when you couldn’t buy Taco Pizza I decided it was time to create my own recipe. So I tinkered around and figured out how to make my own taco pizza – even better than the store bought versions in my humble opinion.

Homemade Taco Pizza Recipe

30 minute homemade pizza dough recipe

In a bowl mix 1 1/4 cup lukewarm water, 1 teas sugar, and 2 1/4 teas yeast with a fork.
Let it rest for about 5 minutes to activate the yeast; you’ll see it “puff up”

Corneal Pizza Crust Recipe

In a mixing bowl mix the following ingredients until blended (I use my dough hook on my Kitchen Aid mixer)
  • yeast starter
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/4 cup milk (or water)
  • 2 TAB olive oil
let yeast dough sit for 30 minutes

Cover with bowl with plastic wrap and put it somewhere warm to rise for 30 minutes. (We set ours near the stove top where we are are either browning the ground beef or preheating the oven.)

While the dough rests, brown 1 lb ground beef. Add in taco seasoning mix and 1/3 cup water.

Preheat oven to 450 F.

roll out pizza crust

Sprinkle pizza pan with cornmeal and roll out the dough right on the pan, pressing it out as needed to cover the pan.

spread taco sauce over crust

Instead of pizza sauce, this pizza uses taco sauce. Note: it is NOT salsa, it is a sauce. You can use mild, medium, or hot depending on your families preference.

top with taco seasoned gorund beef

Now sprinkle the cooked, taco seasoned ground beef over the taco sauce.

top with 2 cups of mexi cheeses

Sprinkle with 2 cups of Mexi Cheese (or any other variety you like).

cook 12 minutes

Bake in preheated oven (450 F) for 12-14 minutes.

Now you can either top the entire pizza (as pictured) or if you aren’t sure you’ll eat all the pizza you may want to just top each individual slice. That way your leftover pizza will have fresh, crunchy Doritos on the top too.

On the top you are going to layer the following:
  • Doritos
  • Shredded Lettuce
  • Tomatoes (fresh or diced with green chilies)
  • Sour Cream

Taco Pizza Recipe

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 1/4 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 teas sugar or honey
  • 1 pkg yeast (2 1/4 teas)
  • 1/4 cup milk (or water)
  • 2+ TAB olive oil
Mix water & yeast in bowl & let stand for 5 minutes to allow to foam up. Add remaining ingredients. You can do this by hand & knead 8 minutes. I take the quick route & mix it all in my mixer, no 8 minutes needed. Drizzle top with additional olive oil, cover with plastic wrap and put somewhere warm to rise for 30 minutes. Roll out on floured surface and put on pizza pan that has been sprinkled with cornmeal. Top with 1 lb ground beef seasoned with taco seasoning mix; top with 2 cups Mexi Cheese. Bake at 450 F for 12-14 minutes.

Top pizza with Doritos, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and sour cream. Enjoy!
