The kids will cut out the pencil shapes, write the es words plurals of given nouns on them, and then paste these pencils onto cardstock for display. It’s a fantastic way to sneak in some learning while letting them get creative.

Teaching Plurals

Teaching plurals doesn’t have to be a dry grammar lesson. Here are some simple tips to make it more interesting for your students:

  • Explain that plurals are words used to indicate that there is more than one of something. The most common way to form plurals is by adding -s or -es to the end of a word.
  • Write a list of singular nouns on the board and go through them one by one, showing how to change them into plurals. For example: cat becomes cats and box becomes boxes
  • Play games where kids have to find objects around the classroom and write down the singular and plural forms. This can turn learning into a scavenger hunt.
  • There are plenty of educational songs and rhymes available that can help reinforce the rules of plurals in a fun way.

Practice makes perfect! Regularly include plural exercises in your lessons so that kids can get plenty of repetition.

Add es to make plural

Steps to Follow:

  1. Print the Template: Start by printing out the pencil template. Make sure you have enough copies for each student.
  2. Cut Out the Pencils: Have the kids carefully cut out the pencil shapes. This is a great way to practice their fine motor skills.
  3. Write the Plurals: On each pencil, ask the students to write the plural form of a list of given nouns. You can provide a list of singular nouns for them to work with. For instance, if you give them the word “bus,” they will write “buses” on the pencil.
  4. Decorate the Pencils: Let the kids decorate their pencils with markers or colored pencils. They can add fun patterns, write their names, or draw little pictures.
  5. Paste on Cardstock: Once the pencils are decorated, have the kids glue them onto a piece of cardstock or construction paper. This makes a great classroom display and helps reinforce what they’ve learned.

This pencil craft is more than just an art project; it’s a multi-sensory learning experience. Here’s why it’s effective:

  • Kids learn best when they can touch and manipulate materials. Cutting, writing, and gluing engage their senses and make the lesson memorable.
  • Seeing the words written out helps reinforce the spelling rules for plurals.
  • Allowing kids to decorate their pencils gives them a creative break, making the learning process more enjoyable.
  • Displaying their completed pencils in the classroom gives students a sense of accomplishment and pride in their work.

I remember when I did a similar activity with my class. The kids were so excited to see their work on display. One of my students, Emily, proudly pointed out her pencil to everyone who came into the room. It was a simple project, but it made a big impact.

Teaching plurals doesn’t have to be boring. With a bit of creativity and some fun activities, your students will be mastering those -s and -es endings in no time! Enjoy crafting!
