Ghost Tea Bag Experiment

All you need to try this simple halloween science are a few simple materials you probably already have on hand:

  • tea bag (the kind with a string and a tag – the thick Stash and Tazo Tea bags work great)
  • staple remover (optional)
  • small plate
  • matches
  • black marker

Spooky Science Experiment

Start by removing the string from the tea bag. Next you will carefully remove the stampler from the tea bag, unfold it and pour the loose tea out of the bag.

Now put something in the middle so you can draw a ghost face on it without bleeding through. We did two black eyes and an “o” larger mouth.

Stand the empty tea bag on it’s end on a small plate. Lift a match and set fire to the TOP of the tea bag.

Remember, many experiments, including this on, require adult supervision. Matches are hot, can burn, and must be used with caution and close supervision.

So why does this work? The fire causes the air around the tea bag to get hotter and hotter while the tea bag itself is getting lighter as it looses volume as it burns up. Between these two factors, they eventually reach a point where the air is warm enough for the tea bag to liftoff.
