What are digraphs?
Digraphs are pairs of letters that come together to represent a single sound in a word. For example, in the word “chop,” the “ch” makes one unique sound. They are an important part of learning how to read and write because they help us understand how different letter combinations create distinct sounds. Some common examples of digraphs include “sh,” “th,” and “wh.” By mastering digraphs, you can enhance your reading skills and improve your phonetic awareness.
Some of the most frequently encountered digraphs in early literacy include ‘sh’, ‘ch’, ‘th’, ‘ph’, and ‘wh’. Each of these combinations produces a unique sound, and familiarizing young learners with them can enhance their phonemic awareness. For example, when children learn the ‘sh’ digraph, they can easily sound out words like ‘sheep’, ‘shoe’, and ‘shoes’. Similarly, the ‘ch’ sound can be found in words like ‘chair’, ‘chocolate’, and ‘chime’.
