What are Blends?
Have you ever heard of blends in phonics? Blends are a fascinating aspect of language that help us understand how letters and sounds combine to form words. In simple terms, a blend occurs when two or more consonant sounds come together but each sound is still pronounced separately.
For example, take the word “blame.” In this case, the “bl” blend combines the sounds of “b” and “l” but each sound is distinct. Another great example is “stop,” where the “st” blend brings together the “s” and “t” sounds.
Blends can be found at the beginning, middle, or end of words. Some common initial blends include “gr” in “green,” “sm” in “smile,” and “cl” in “clap.” You can also find blends at the end of words, such as “hand” with “nd” or “mild” with “ld.”
Understanding blends is important for developing reading and pronunciation skills. They provide a foundation for recognizing and decoding words, making it easier for readers to tackle new vocabulary.
