What Is a Soft G?
Before you begin, it’s helpful to understand what soft G words are. A soft G makes the /j/ sound, as in giant, magic, or giraffe. This often happens when G is followed by the letters E, I, or Y. We call this “Gentle Cindy” rule—because C and G become soft when followed by E, I, or Y. It’s like Cindy is reminding them to be gentle! Some teachers may have their students draw a face. The eyes are made with /e/, the nose with an /i/, and the mouth with a /y/. Then the hair is created by drawing /c/ and /g/. It is a great visual to help our little ones remember this rule.
