Icicle Craft

Icicles are so fascinating. Growing up in Seattle, we didn’t have many of them. So when I moved to the midwest, I was attracted to them. How they form and how big they can actually get. My daughter has the same fascination. So of course, making an icicle crafts was a must as winter months of December, January, and February approach! We made these tinfoil icicles this time and it was so much fun!

Preschool Winter Crafts

Most people think of making snowman crafts, snowflake, crafts, penguin and polar bear crafts to celebrate winter. But if you live where it is cold and gets to freezing – you know icicles are a common winter sight during the chilly winter months. Kids of all ages from toddlers, preschoolers, kindergartners, grade 1, and grade 2 students will love making these fun winter crafts for kids.

Supplies Needed:

  • Tin foil
  • Scissors
  • White Glue
  • Glitter
  • Paper Plate
  • Yarn
  • Hot Glue (optional)

The first thing we did was rip off a piece of tinfoil. We didn’t measure, but I would guess it was probably about 12×12 inches. Now make this piece into a triangle. This will help make the tapering look of a true icicle.

Now literally crinkle the tinfoil up into an icicle shape. It was loosely crinkled up.

Next we put a strip of white glue and a separate strip of glitter onto a paper plate. This way we could just dip the icicle into the white glue and then dip it in the glitter. We lightly put the icicle in the white glue. I didn’t want it to be completely covered in glitter, just lightly touched with it. Then when we dipped the icicle in the glitter we pushed a little harder to make sure all of the white glue was covered.

When the white glue dried, we added a loop to the icicle so we could hang it. For the loop we used yarn, but any string or thread would work. This isn’t a heavy icicle.

I used hot glue to attach it because, well honestly, I am inpatient and wanted it to dry quickly. Waiting for white glue to dry between the tin foil and yarn would have allowed the yarn to slip down the tinfoil, and I didn’t want to mess with it. BUT that doesn’t mean that white glue wouldn’t work.

Kids can get creative with how they crinkle it up to create different looks or use smaller pieces of tin foil to make smaller icicles. The possibilities are endless and there is no right way to make them!
