Kids will go nuts over this easy winter activities for preschoolers, kindergartner, toddlers, and grade 1 students that they will want to try over and over and over again! To make the winter science,  children will use a couple simple kitchen supplies to create a baking soda and vinegar science experiment. Get ready for giggles of excitement as the snowman gets bigger and bigger before it POPS! Use this as a snowman activity for kids during the cold months of December, January, and February!

Exploding Snowman

To complete winter science experiments all you need are these simple supplies you already have in your kitchen.

Supplies:

  • Sandwich size ziplock bag (or larger if you want to double it for double the fun!) – the slide ones are quick and easy or little fingers!
  • vinegar
  • blue food coloring (optional)
  • baking soda
  • paper towel
  • black sharpie
  • nose out of orange construction paper, orange felt, or orange sharpie

This snowman stem challenge begins with decorating your ziplock bag to look like a snowman using a sharpie, orange construction paper nose, or whatever other supplies you want to use to make your cute snowman craft

Snowman science activities for preschool

Decorate a ziplock bag with black eyes, orange triangular nose and black dots for mouth. You can use any supplies you want; we choose to keep it simple by making the mouth and nose with a black sharpie and making a cute orange nose out of construction paper.

Snowman Activities

Put 3 teaspoons of baking soda in a paper towel, wrap up into a pouch.
HINT: You can add more baking soda for a bigger reaction!

Winter Science Experiments

Put the baking soda wrapped paper towel in your ziplock snowman craft.
add vinegar to the ziplock bag to make a cute melting snowman that is about to explode!

Winter activities

Now quickly pour in  1-2 cups of distilled white vinegar into your melting snowman ziplock bag. Quickly seal the bag and get ready for the chemical reaction to start with the vinegar and baking soda.
NOTE: We mixed blue food coloring with the vinegar for a fun chilly pop of color.

Baking Soda and Vinegar Experiment

So how does this simple chemistry experiment for kids work? As baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, mixes with vinegar, carbon dioxide is created. The bag starts to fill with carbon dioxide (and that’s why you see the bag start to swell up) until the pressure is too much and … BOOM!

  • before you try this easy preschool science experiment ask them to guess what will happen (called a hypothesis)
  • Try with different size bags
  • Or have children mix up the amount of vinegar or baking soda and see what happens

      My students are currently on remote learning. Each Wednesday we like to jazz up our lessons with fun, hands on experiments to video and share with our students. I can not wait until tomorrow to try the exploding snowman! My students are going to be thrilled.
