4 types of instruments
When we think about musical instruments, we can categorize them into four main types: string instruments, woodwind instruments, brass instruments, and percussion instruments. Each of these categories has its unique characteristics and plays a vital role in the world of music.
A Woodwind Instrument
This post covers wood wind instruments. Woodwind instruments, such as the flute, clarinet, and saxophone, produce sound when air is blown into them and finds its way through a reed or an opening. These instruments have a distinct, rich quality that is often featured in orchestras and bands. Woodwinds are known for their ability to convey emotion, making them perfect for both solo performances and ensemble music.

The pages included in this pack are:

- Alto Sax – Even though the alto saxophone is made of brass, it uses a reed, making it a woodwind instrument. Invented by Adolphe Sax in 1846, the cheerful sound is made by blowing air into the mouthpiece and making the tiny reed vibrate. These saxophones are used in jazz, concert bands, marching bands and even rock music.
- Bari sax –ย The bari saxophone is a giant, low-pitched saxophone that sounds a lot like a bass guitar. Often used in jazz, rock and pop music and bands, it has a spit valve to get rid of the condensation that builds up inside. Made from brass, it uses a reed to make its sound. It is very heavy, so players use a special strap to help hold it up.
- Bass Clarinet – The bass clarinet is a large, low-pitched clarinet that has a curvy neck, a big bell and is held up with a peg that rests on the floor. The notes it plays are an octave lower than a regular clarinet. It uses a single reed as well, it is just bigger than the others. This clarinet is used in orchestras, bands and jazz to create deep, dark and even spooky sounds.
- Bassoon – The bassoon is a large, woodwind instrument that makes a sound like a deep voice. Using a double reed, it can play low notes, but can also go quite high, making it very versatile. It is known as the โclown of the orchestraโ as it can be used for silly, scary and sad music. Made of several pieces, it has tons of keys and can be tricky to play.
- Clarinet – The clarinet is known for its clear sound, made with a vibrating reed on a mouthpiece. The name clarinet comes from the Italian word clarino, which means โlittle trumpet.โ These instruments can be made from wood or plastic. They come in different sizes with the B-flat being the most popular.
- Contrabassoon – The contrabassoon is the deepest-sounding member of the woodwind family. It plays an octave lower than the regular bassoon, reaching the lowest notes on a piano. When upfolded, the tubing can reach over 16 feet long. It is so heavy that it is held up with a metal spike that rests on the floor. This instrument uses a double reed that vibrates when you blow.
- English horn – The English horn is similar to an oboe, only a bit longer and has a pear-shaped bell. With its double reed, its tone is lower and more mellow than an oboes. With its deep and warm sound, it is often used to play sad, beautiful or peaceful melodies. The name is a bit of a mix-up as it is not an English instrument nor is it a horn.
- Flute – A flute is a cylindrical woodwind instrument that is made of silver and is held sideways to the mouth. It is a long tube that has one open end and one capped end. The sound is created when the player blows across the mouthpiece at the capped end. The notes are made by pressing metal keys that cover holes along the tube.
- Oboe – The oboe is a long, skinny woodwind instrument that has a nasal sound. It requires a lot of air pressure to make a good sound. Playing the note โA,โ it is the instrument that the orchestra is tuned to before concerts. The sound is made by blowing through the double reed and the notes are made by opening and closing metal keys.
- Piccolo – The piccolo is a small flute that plays an octave higher than a regular flute, making it the highest instrument in an orchestra. Itโs bright and cheerful sound that often imitates bird calls is made by blowing air across a hole, just like the flute. It is used in exciting parts of music and can easily be heard even over loud sounds.
- Recorder – The recorder is a fun and simple instrument that can be made from wood or plastic. It has 7 finger holes and 1 thumb hole and has been used for centuries, even by King Henry VIII. Sometimes called an โEnglish Flute,โ it is an old instrument that is an easy instrument to start with.
- Soprano Sax – The soprano saxophone is the smallest, and highest-pitched member of the saxophone family. The very high, bright and clear sound is made when air is blown over a vibrating reed on the mouthpiece. When the keys are pressed, they open and close holes to change the notes. This instrument is trickier to play in tune than the bigger saxes as it is so small and quite sensitive.
- Tenor Sax – The tenor saxophone is a big, brassy instrument that makes a low, warm sound which is perfect for jazz. It uses a vibrating reed for making its sound, with fingers pressing keys to change the notes. It is heavier and bigger than the alto saxophone, making it better for older children or adults to play.
