Games Alphabetical Order

I always like making our homeschool fun by making practicing alphabet order into a fun learning game.  My kids not only learn, but are eager learners who have fun in the process! This games alphabetical order is such a fun way to learn and practice alphabetizing – putting letters in order A-Z. To practice abc order you can have students put alphabet flashcards in order, complete worksheets on what comes next, but we like to play a lot of games in our house. And this alphabet game is such a fun way for kids to practice in a little more abstract way. For example, children will need to know that l comes after b without all the letters in between. Play this alphabetizing game with kindergarteners, grade 1, and grade 2 students! This abc game was inspired by Racko (a fun number game).

Alphabet -O - An alphabetizing game for kids

ABC Order Games

Alphabet-O is an alphabetical order games online for children ages 5+ and can be played with 2-4 players. (it can be used solo in practice mode)

The game of RACK-O is for puttting numbers in order. If you’ve never played it is a really fun way for kids to work on putting things in order, again abstractly. As they will need to figure out that 21 goes before 40, but after 17. The game helps by putting the numbers in order so if you have them lined up, the number should all go from left to right. Unfortunately, they don’t make an alphabet version, which is the skill we are looking to practice. So I whipped up a deck of alphabet cards that work with our game, but practice the skill of abc order.

HINT: We use the card holders from that game, but you can still play without them if you prefer.

Alphabet Game

The game uses both upper and lower case letters to help kids with letter recognition and fluency. Our letters, like the game are staggered to visually help early learners see when the alphabet letters are in order from A to Z.

Teaching Alphabetical Order

There are two ways to play this fun, free printable alphabet game

  1. Follow the included instructions to play traditional Alphabet-o. You randomly put your ten cards in the rack. Now on your turn you draw a card. You can replace one card in your rack. Yep, you can only move one card, no exceptions. Then play passes to the left where the other player can either use your discarded card or draw a new one. You have to be one step ahead to get cards in order first and yello Alphabet-o to win.
  2. Lightening Round – just deal out 10 cards and the first to put them in the correct order yells Alphabet-O
