Long a vowel

Once she is comfortable with that skill, then I can review and pull in other skills. This worksheet is that type of activity. I would recommend using it only after you have taught all the way long a can be spelled.

1. Open Door – An open door is when a word or a syllable ends with a vowel. We say that the vowel is not closed in by a consonant. That means the door is open and the vowel can shout its name. …in other words, makes the long vowel sound. (ha/zy, A/pril)
2. Magic E – In this syllable type an e is added to the end of the word, and the vowel says its name. (cake, cape)
3. ay – “ay” is a vowel team that is used at the end of a syllable or word. (day, may/hem)
4. ai – “ai” is another vowel team that is used in the middle of the syllable or word. (rain, com/plain)
5. ea- This is a fun vowel team. It actually makes three sounds. The most common is the long e sound (team), it can make the short e sound (head), and it can make the long a sound. (great, break)
6. ey – Once again, many times this says the long e sound. But it can also make the long a sound. (prey, con/vey)
7. eigh – Whenever this four-letter are together, they make the long a sound. (weight, neighbor)

Once all these long a sounds are taught, it is great to practice spelling them. And this is where this worksheet comes in.

Long a Words Worksheet

To use, simply print and grab some Do-A-Dot markers.  Depending on the level of your student, you can read the word for them or have the child read it. When you get to the blank, a long sound should be made.

Next, they look at the three options for spelling the long a sound and choose the one that will correctly spell the word. If you want some extra practice, have them write the correct spelling on a whiteboard once they dot the correct long a sound.
