What Are Like Terms?
In mathematics, *like terms* are terms that have exactly the same variable components raised to the same powers. This means that their coefficients (the numbers in front of the variables) can be different, but the variable parts stay the same. For example, in the expression **3x + 5x**, both terms contain the variable *x*, making them like terms. They can be combined to simplify the expression, resulting in **8x**.
Why Are Like Terms Important?
Identifying and combining like terms is crucial in simplifying expressions and solving equations. By consolidating like terms, you can make complex problems easier to handle. For instance, if you encounter an expression like **4a + 2b – 3a + b**, you can first combine the like terms to simplify it to **(4a – 3a) + (2b + b)**, which equals **1a + 3b** or simply **a + 3b**. This streamlined version often makes other calculations much simpler, especially when you’re solving for an unknown variable!
Tips for Identifying Like Terms:
