First, let’s talk about what a blend is. A blend is when two consonants are side by side, and both keep their individual sounds. For example, in frog, you can hear both the /f/ and /r/.
It’s important to know how blends differ from digraphs. A digraph, like “sh” in shoe, makes one sound, but with a blend, both letters are heard clearly. This is why r blends can take a little practice!

To help our little ones focus on r-blends, here are some fun coloring worksheets. This is an easy one. First, print off the worksheets. Next, gather up some crayons or colored pencils, and you are ready to go.
How to use:
- Say the word – Look at the picture on the worksheet, like a frog or crab. Say the word aloud so your child can hear how it sounds.
- Repeat the word – Have your child say the word back to check they’re getting it right.
- Color the blend – Once they say it correctly, let them color the picture and circle the matching r blend (e.g., for frog, they’ll circle “fr”).
Learning r blends takes time, but small successes add up fast! Celebrate every win with a sticker or a high five. With some practice and encouragement, your child will soon be blending like a pro.
