How To Explain Place Value

Place value is the value that each of the digits in a number has.  There are 10s, 100th, 1000th, and so on. For example: In the number 450, the 5 represents 5 tens, or 50. This is the 10th spot. In the number 5,070, the 5 represents 5,000 or is in the thousandth spot. It is important to understand that while the number itself may be the same (for instance 5 in the examples above), it doesn’t matter. It solely depends on where it is in the number.

For this active lesson, print the numbers and grab a ball or bean bag. You can place down whichever number you would like. If you’re working on tens, only put two numbers down. If you’re working with 100’s, then put down three.

When the numbers are placed, ask your child to read the number outloud. Then ask them to throw the ball, or bean bag or whichever manipulative you are using, to different place values. Mix it up, then mix up the numbers and try again. This is a super simple, active and fun activity to help kids learn all about place value.
