This reader is a great introduction to Rosa Parks, Black History and the segregation laws that were in place many years ago.
Rosa Parks was born on February 4, 1913 in Alabama. Growing up was had for Rosa because she had to be segregated. Even though African Americans were granted freedom after the American Civil War, most were equal under the law, but seperated. Black people had to attend different schools, churches, stores, and sit in the back of the bus if they got to sit at all. On December 1, 1955, Rosa was riding on the bus home from work. The seats were filled up and there were more people trying to get on the bus. The bus driver insisted that the African Americans get out of their seats to make room for the white people to sit; Rosa Parks did not get up. She was arrested for disobeying the segregation law, but this began the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Finally the US Supreme Court ruled the law was unconstitutional ending the boycott in December 1956. As Rosa received many threats, she and her husband moved to Detroit, Michigan, but she continued to fight for freedom and equality.
