It is not uncommon for children to get bored of practicing sight words. If we just ‘quiz’ them or ask them to write the words over and over, they can easily get bored. That doesn’t mean that we don’t help them learn, just that we encourage them to practice and learn with fun activities. Our latest favorite at our house is sight word mats. I created this fun turkey sight words Mat to use during November, for Thanksgiving with preschool, pre k, kindergarten, and first grade students.

Turkey Sight Words

CVC words are typically the first words that children learn. To me it is important to make sure that children realize that learning can be fun, so I try to find games and activities that will be engaging and encourage them to learn. There are a few ways that this turkey sight words Mat can be used. This printable activity comes with a turkey mat as well as printable alphabet tiles. These are perfect for preschoolers, kindergartners, and grade 1 students.

The first thing to do after printing is cut out the alphabet tiles.

HINT:  You can laminate the alphabet tiles and the CVC mat to extend the life of the activity.

If your child is just beginning to learn CVC words, you can provide a list of words for them to copy with the CVC mat and alphabet tiles.

HINT:  If you laminate, you can use dry erase markers on the lines for the child to practice writing the letters as well as using the alphabet tiles.

If your child has more experience, you can speak the word and ask your child to spell it.

Another idea is to mix up the alphabet tiles on the table or in a bag and ask the child to pick three and see if they can create a word. If they can, they can place them on the turkey and also write out the word.

This CVC Sight Word Mat is perfect for helping children practice sight words in an engaging way with a fun Thanksgiving theme!
