If you are looking for the best berry crisp, you will love this recipe! You can use summer fresh berries and make it a mixed berry crisp or brag a convenenient bag from the grocery store and make it a frozen berry crisp. No matter where you get the berries, this will quickly become your top berry dessert recipes! My families favorite part is the berry crumble – yum!
Make the crumble topping first by combining the oats, flour, brown sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt. Stir to combine. Pour in the melted butter and stir to incorporate. Set aside.
In another bowl add the frozen berries, flour, granulated sugar, salt, lemon juice and vanilla extract and toss gently to combine.
Pour the berry mixture into an 8 x 8’’ or similar size casserole dish or pie plate.
Drop spoonfulls of the topping mixutre you set aside evenly over the top of the berry mixture.
Bake the berry crisp for 40-45 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and berries are bubbling around the edges.
Remove from the oven, place on a wire rack, and allow to cool for at least 7-10 minutes before serving.
Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, if desired. Cover leftovers and store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
Notes
This recipe works equally well with frozen or fresh berries. Frozen berries are convenient and picked at their peak of freshness. Fresh berries always feel like summer when we pick them from our berry bushes, u-pick farms, or farmer’s markets. If you use frozen berries, thaw the berries and drain excess liquid in a strainer. You can do this by putting the bag in a tupperware (in case the bag leaks) overnight in the fridge or put the frozen berries in the strainer and run water over them until they are thawed – about 5 minutes.
