Preheat oven to 375 F. Mix thoroughly the 2 sticks of softened butter, 1 cup o powdered sugar, 1 egg, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and 1 1/2 teaspoon almond extract.
Blend in 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 2 1/2 cups flour.
Divide dough in half and mix red food coloring in half of the dough. Roll a rope out of the red dough and a rope out of the white down. Twist the two ropes together and shape into a candy cane; place on parchment lined cookie sheet. Repeat until you fill a baking sheet. In a small bowl mix 1/2 cup crushed candy canes and 1/2 cup white sugar. Sprinkle each candy cane with crushed candy cane and sugar mixture. NOTE: Try to make the ropes thin so the candy cane cookies aren't too big.
Bake 9 minutes each. Cool for 1 minute on the cookie sheet before placing on a cooling rack to cook completely before storing in an airtight container.
