Fall is the perfect time to bring some seasonal fun into the classroom, and what better way to do that than with a writing craft? I’m excited to share a simple but engaging activity that combines writing prompts with a leaf-themed craft. It’s a great way to encourage your kindergartners to express themselves while getting in some much-needed writing practice.

This activity uses a printable leaf template along with several writing prompts like, “If I were a leaf…” and “What do leaves do when they fall?” The kids can write their responses, cut out the leaf, and attach their writing for a beautiful fall-themed classroom display.

Writing prompts are an awesome way to get young kids excited about writing. They provide a bit of structure, which helps kids focus their thoughts, but still allow for creativity. In kindergarten, where many kids are just starting to put their ideas into words, prompts are a fantastic tool.

When I first started using writing prompts, I noticed that my students were less overwhelmed about writing. Giving them a fun prompt like “If I were a leaf…” helps them tap into their imagination and gives them a clear place to start. Instead of staring at a blank page, they have a focus, which makes the process smoother and more enjoyable for everyone.

How to Use This Activity: Step by Step

Here’s how you can use this fall writing prompt and craft activity in your classroom or at home:

1. Download the Leaf Template and Writing Prompts You can download the free leaf template and writing prompts below. Print out enough leaf templates and writing prompt sheets for each student. The writing prompt sheet should have space for the kids to write or draw their responses.
2. Introduce the Writing Prompts Gather the students and introduce the prompts. You could say something like, “Today, we’re going to pretend we’re leaves! What would it be like if you were a leaf floating in the air? What would you see, feel, or hear? Let’s write about it!”
   You can read the prompts out loud and discuss them with the class before they start writing. This helps students start thinking about their answers.
3. Have the Kids Write Their Responses Now it’s time to write! If your kindergartners are still developing their writing skills, they can draw pictures to go along with their responses. Some might only write a few words, while others may be ready to write full sentences. Encourage all efforts—at this stage, it’s about getting their thoughts on paper.
4. Cut Out the Leaves Once they’ve completed their writing, they can cut out the leaf template. I like to give the kids some time to color and decorate their leaves before we move on. This personalizes the activity and adds a little creativity.
