Do you parent by counting to 1,2,3?

Does it work?

Here is an interesting article about The Problem with Counting 1-2-3 by Positive Parenting Solutions.  I think there are definitely possible problems with all discipline methods because both we parents and children are all fallen sinful people.

So tell me  what do you think of the 1-2-3 method? What do you use in your house?

  1. Interesting article. I use the counting method. My 5-y-o daughter gets two requests before I start counting. I rarely have to count, and when I do, I rarely get past one before she is complying. I do not do halvsies. If it gets to 3, she ends up in timeout. The key to any discipline method is follow-through. If I say behavior X will result in consequence Y, then Y has to happen. This is why I changed my consequence from toys not picked up get thrown in the trash to toys not picked up go into "toy jail", as I realized the first time she failed to comply, I was NOT going to throw good money in the trash (thankfully that event was papers, not toys).
