One of the most important skills we can teach our children is to recognize, count, and spend money (wisely!) I recently posted a HUGE Pooh Preschool Pack that included a large section on Money, but I am afraid that many people may have missed it . So here is a closer look at what I think is a super cool resource for teaching kids about money in a fun, relaxed way!

Version 1 – Learn the Coin Names (Easiest) – The kids roll the money dice and move their characters (in the free download or your own plastic figures) to the next coin that looks like the one you rolled. You say the name of the coin they roll so they start to hear & recognize the names of the coins. There are 2 spots where you go back to start (Pooh, a bear of very little brain, did something unwise) and one where you go on a river of honey to jump ahead. This is very simple and FUN! My kids have played this countless times this week!! My 3 year old now knows all the names of the coins easily.

Version 2 – Money buys things (Easy) – The kids are planning a party for Piglet. They get a sheet that is missing party supplies (gifts, cake, candles, confetti, music, honey, party hats). imageKids roll the money dice (same dice as the other game to save ink!) and earn the money or coupon they roll.

Kids can then save their money purchase items when they have enough money. (As kids at this point are unable to make change I have them save to have the exact change)

This game teaches kids that things cost different amounts of money and that you have to save to buy what you want. They also learn the value of coupons with the buy 1 get 1 free coupon (unlike store coupons I allow them to get any item of their choice free). In this game kids actually handle real (or paper) money, say the name of the coins as they roll them, and buy the items they need. The sheet with the cost of each item also has a green change purse with what coins are needed to buy each item.  image
My 3 year old was able to grasp this and complete it. This version was also a BIG hit and they requested to play it over and over again! My Kindergartner LOVED this game too!

Version 3 – Money Value & Making Change (Hard) – The game play is the same as Version 2 except the kids can use different coins to add up to the total. This involves knowledge of the coin values and higher math skills for adding & subtracting.  You can even have older kids make change for each other. My Kindergartner is not ready for this yet; I would guess 1st or 2nd grade-5th grade.
